One hundred and sixteen participants took part in the annual TATS Pre0K ESE Contact meeting held in Orlando on November 2. Participants included school district personnel and their community partners, state level staff from DOE, VPK, Head Start, AWI, and TATS field and central office staff.
Cathy Bishop from DOE and Pam Tempson from DOH presented a preview of the joint technical assistance paper being developed to address the transition from Early Steps to Pre-K ESE. The theme of the meeting was inclusion with a focus on providing behavior supports for young children with challenging behaviors. Rochelle Lentini from the University of South Florida, Center for Evidence-Based Practice: Young Children with Challenging Behaviors, presented a keynote address on creating teaching tools for young children with challenging behaviors within the teaching pyramid framework. In the afternoon she presented an in-depth look at putting the teaching tools into practice. Participants in groups applied the concepts and strategies using a case study format.
Size-alike districts also met in the afternoon to discuss the type of supports they would need to implement smooth transitions and to utilized the framework for Teaching Tools. TATS regional staff facilitated these group discussions.
