One hundred and thirteen participants attended the TATS Pre-K ESE Coordinators’ Meeting on Wednesday and Thursday, May 5 and 6th in Lake Mary. Fifty-four districts, ten FDLRS, three local Early Steps, two VPK regions and three Head Start grantees were represented at the meeting. The two days were filled with updates from state level staff, presentations on what is happening around the state, and brainstorming sessions on current issues. Judging from the evaluations, it was successful in meeting people’s needs!
The theme of the meeting was Taking Stock and Moving Forward: Next Steps. Wednesday morning and afternoon featured opportunities to hear updates on the State Performance Plan (SPP) Indicators from DOE/BEESS presented by Marilyn Hibbard, an overview of the new Speech and Language rules by Shannon Hall-Mills, and an Early Steps update by Sally Golden-McCord.
These were followed by three break-out sessions:
Focused size-alike discussions followed the breakout sessions. Topics included BDI-2 questions/issues, VPK, late referrals, what’s working well when districts collaborate with Early Steps, family involvement, children with challenging behaviors, use of on-line application and/or registration for Pre-K services.
On Thursday morning, Heather Diamond from the DOE/BEESS presented an overview of Response to Intervention (RtI), Lilli Copp from the Head Start State Collaboration Office discussed the changes in Head Start, and Batya Elbaum from the University of Miami discussed SPP Indicators 7 and 8.
