Curriculum & Instruction - Language and Literacy

The Center for Early Literacy Learning (CELL) has many resources on effective literacy learning practices with young children with disabilities or delays. One resource for families is CELLcasts which are audio/video versions of CELL practice guides which are available to view online or download to an iPod/Mp3 player. The CELLcasts are divided into three areas, Infants, Toddlers, and Preschoolers. CELL is funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs Research to Practice Division and is a major initiative of the Center for Evidence-Based Practices at the Orelena Hawks Puckett Institute.

Infants

Scribble, Scribble - fun and interesting ideas for introducing infants to writing materials.  

Baby’s First Picture Books - fun and interesting ideas for looking at picture books with infants. 

Sights & Sounds - provides ways to expose infants to new sights and sounds.

World of Words - everyday literacy-rich opportunities in the community.

Homespun Fun - matching letters to sounds and learning new words - two of the many benefits of repeated readings.

Diaper Ch Ch Changes - simple word and movement diaper changing games.

OoHs and AaHS - Cooing and babbling. Fun-filled ideas to increase a baby’s vocalizations.

Toddlers

Listen Up - playful activities to help toddlers develop listening skills.

My Turn, Your Turn - playful activities to help toddlers develop turn taking skills.

Books & Crayons of One’s Own - shows parents how art supplies can help build toddlers’ literacy. 

Get Write on It - ways to expose toddlers to encourage early writing.

Letters & Symbols Are Everywhere - teaches toddlers that signs and symbols have meanings.   

Act Natural - playing dress up provides toddlers with opportunities to develop language and speech skills.

Preschoolers

Delighting in Writing - preschoolers using drawings, symbols, and invented spelling to express thoughts and feelings.

CELLpops - From the Center for Early Literacy Learning, these areinteractive web versions of CELL mini-posters that parents and classroom teachers can use with children to promote early literacy learning in a variety of settings. Divided into three areas, Infants, Toddlers, and Preschoolers, they cover a wide range of activities: daily routines, music and movement, indoor and outdoor play, meals and snacks, bath time, trips in the car, visiting places in the community and neighborhood, transitions and waiting, group or circle time, etc. CELL is funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs Research to Practice Division and is a major initiative of the Center for Evidence-Based Practices at the Orelena Hawks Puckett Institute.

Enhancing Language Development in Everyday Routines (Time: 7 minutes)
This video provides useful strategies in Spanish, to families to help enhance language development of children who are dual language learners.  This video was produced to help empower families to support their child’s language development by embedding practical strategies into daily activities in the natural environment. 

Este video ofrece estrategias útiles en Español para las familias para ayudarles a reforzar el desarrollo del lenguaje de niños que están aprendiendo dos idiomas a la vez. Este video fue producido para motivar a las familias a apoyar a sus hijos en el desarrollo del lenguaje a través de prácticas estrategias diarias en actividades cotidianas que se dan en el ambiente natural de las familias. 

A Window to the World: Promoting Early Language and Literacy Development

Podcast
Parents, Books and the Roots of Literacy
From the New America Foundation, Early Education Initiative (January 24, 2011), this podcast features Gabrielle Miller, a national expert on early literacy interventions. The talk focuses on research showing the importance of positive family involvement for a child's later reading success.
